Short Local Move: How To Plan It Right

A couple packing before moving from NYC to Buffalo

Just because you’re planning a short local move, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have a lot of work ahead of you. Moving across the town is an equally frustrating and stressful task, and the only difference is that it is quite faster. Believe me when I tell you that learning how to plan a short local move will be out of great importance.

No matter the size of your new residential space, and if its larger or smaller then your previous one, many will say that’s only a small move. However, there is nothing small in any moving process. Yes, you have fewer miles to go over, and maybe even fewer things than most people do, still this doesn’t mean your moving is light.

Good Organization Is A Key To A Successful Short Local Move

Not everyone is eager or ready to move to a different city or a country.  It is perfectly fine to stay where you feel comfortable and happy even though you know you’ll have a lot more opportunities somewhere else.

Moving is a tremendous task, you’ll have plenty of things to do. Pack all the furniture, personal belongings, and fragile items and then you’ll need to quickly and securely transport them from point A to point B. So, how can you make this process successful and efficient?

Before you start packing things in a rush and without any order, stop, take a deep breath and make a thorough list of all the things that need to be taken care of before the move. The point of making a comprehensive checklist is to keep you from forgetting things and tasks.

Moving can place a lot of pressure on your chest, but when you use a list and mark all the things you have already done, it will help you feel relief since you will see the progress.

Things you need to do prior to moving day

Here is the shortlist of the most important things you should do before the moving day.

  1. Change the address – It’s obvious that among the first things you need to do is to notify a bank, a post office, or your insurance company of your relocation and provide a new mailing address so you won’t miss a bill or important notice. Just in case try to make arrangements with your landlord, or neighbor to forward any straggling mail labeled with your name.
  2. Declutter and downsize – This is the most useful advice anyone can give you since honestly, we never really know how much useless stuff we have until we start sorting and packing. Don’t be lazy and go through your belongings thoroughly, then decide which belongings are essential and which ones you’ll need to get rid of. You can donate or sell them, so this is how you’ll save time and storage space while earning some money as well.
  3. Label the boxes – Avoid wasting time when unpacking by organizing the packing process. Always pack one room at a time and label boxes in detail, for instance, place a label that says “kitchen-dishes” or “wardrobe-shoes”, and you get the point. This way you will do yourself a big favor and you won’t have to open more than one box when you’re unpacking and setting up a specific room. Learn to pack as efficiently as you can, but this does not mean you should try to fit all the dishes in one box, if it’s too heavy it will fall apart. If packing everything up seems too overwhelming, don’t hesitate to hire professional help. You can always call us to give you a helping hand.
  4. Pack an essentials bag – No matter the distance packing a small bag with the necessities is always a good idea. After you arrive at your new address, you might be too tired, or too busy with other obligations to go through all the boxes to find basic things like toiletries, fresh bedding, medications, additional clothes, and other personal belongings that you use daily. Prepare a special bag for essentials a few days before the move and fill it up as you pack.  Lastly, the night before the move you will add things like toiletries and meds and you can rest assured that you will have all you need for your first night in a new home.

Choose a professional moving company

If you aren’t thrilled to do everything on your own, the best thing you can do is to hire professional movers, especially if you have a lot of stuff, and some of them are particularly heavy.

We all care about the safety of our furniture and other fragile items. That is why allowing a team of professionals to pack, transport, and unload your belongings with utmost care is a way better option than doing this on your own with a group of friends. Heavy lifting can cause serious injuries so be sure you make every preparation to avoid them.

If you are still in the search of a reliable moving company why don’t you give us a quick call? We will make sure to explain to you every single step of this process.

Plan A Short Local Move With Ease

I can understand that performing a DIY move can be inviting idea since you can save some money and spend some time with your friends and family. You can even throw an unpacking party and invite your closest people to help you out while you have fun. A lot of people choose to do it on their own.

Moving is exciting, and you should enjoy the thrill of starting a new chapter instead of letting stress take over. All you have to do is start as early as possible, make a to-do list a few days before an actual move, and equip yourself with good mood and patience.
